Soft and hard reset Nokia 5800

Soft Reset

The reset will restore all the phone's settings to factory default and delete all user info. You need to use the dialer to enter this code.

*#7370#

Hard Reset

Hard reset only works if you had previously updated the phone to v20. Please make backup before applying this type of reset, since it will restore the phone's settings as well as erasing all the data in the phone memory.

  1. Switch off the phone.

  2. Press GREEN + RED + CAMERA + ON simultaneously until you see the "Select Country" option.

Note:

  1. The default password is 12345. You need to press and hold the key until the number appear.

  2. Please do not confuse "revert to factory settings" with soft reset. "Revert to factory settings" can be achieved from Menu > Settings > Phone > Phone mgmt. > Factory settings or *#7870# code, and will only restore the phone to its factory setting without deleting data.

  2. What do you do if you can't even turn off the damned phone?

Mine is stuck on the 'whitescreen' - a white background, with the word NOKIA on it. No going forward, no going backward, just sits there, chewing its battery.

The whole phoen is under TWO WEEKS OLD, so if anyone's reading this and considering buying this phone, DON'T!

    ReplyDelete
  3. @mathew: just remove the battery to shut the hang phone down. BTW, try to upgrade the phone with the latest phone software.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Mathew problem is with ur Memory Card... u need to format it ans use ur mobile.. it happend with me somany times ;)

  5. what should i do if all the predownloaded videos wont play anymore. it says "unable to play clip".. i just had it upgraded to the latest software. then it didnt play any more.

    ReplyDelete
  6. The very first thing that I do after upgrading to the latest software is, I hard formatted the phone. I am not sure about the videos, but, I had several issues with other components. Thus, hard formatting the phone may solve your problem.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Could you be more specific. What is your problem actually? Usually hard format will solve most of the problem.

  11. my memory is error.alway lose some file in the memory.

    ReplyDelete
  12. What did you meant by losing some file in the memory? Do you mean that the file store in phone memory is missing? Would you elaborate more?

    ReplyDelete
  13. same here.
my friends and i also have missing file problem
i.e : you have 300 song in playslist, after a few days, only 125 left, things like that..sometimes pictures is also gone@corrupted. formatted the mmc several time, still the same..

and when surfing the internet, it tends to hang, stuck and cant do nothing about it.

    any solutions?

  14. My phone isn't locking properly.. If I lock it, the screen stays on, using all my battery life in a few hours. I've tried a soft reset to no avail.. If I did a hard reset, do you think it would help? And if so, how do I back up my data?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Usually a hard reset would soft a lot of problem.

To backup the data is easy.

Menu > Apps > File Mgr > Backup.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Perhaps your memory card was damage.

    ReplyDelete
  17. my phone didn't lock properly and drained all my battery but the screen has now froze and wont unlock. i have tried to hard reset but it will not work. any help?

    ReplyDelete
  18. @meghan: If hard reset does not work, perhaps you should send the phone to Nokia.

    ReplyDelete
  19. hi guys, thanks 4 the good work, i honestly think nokia has lost it. wat happend to quality control. my dumbass 5800 has mood swings, it works when it feels like n the screen goes berzerck. all u see is lines n colors on the screen then it goes off. iv hard resetted it, updated it but its the same. ny ideas guys?much appreaciated. cheers.

  20. This phone is the biggest pile of dogshite, I have had nothing but trouble since it came out of the box! Go the iPhone!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. But, I don't have any problem with this phone.

    ReplyDelete
  22. rizauddin, you are either very lucky, very undemanding, or are just being paid to say nice things about the phone.

There're no other possible explanation, given the complaints here and everywhere else.

Personally, I don't have the serious problems others here have, but I am absolutely outraged that synchronisation with outlook is so poor. Given what I read on this front before buying it, I feel Nokia engaged in false advertising.

My next phone is therefore unlikely to be a Nokia - they have lost my trust.

    ReplyDelete
  23. @mathew: What I intend to achieve from this post was to share on how to hard format the phone. Period.

ps: I am not paid to write this post.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Glad to hear it. Do note that I gave three possible reasons you were being nice about the phone, not one.

    ReplyDelete
  25. rizauddin u are the 1st n only person i heard from that doesnt have ny problem wit the nokia dogshit 5800. i tried the nokia website forum on 5800 n all i get is the same complains. i think u jus lucky but a word of advice, get another fone quick cos i bet u its gonna happen soon.

  26. THE HARD AND SOFT RESET DESCRIPTION IS WRONG...

    This is right:

    Normal Reset (Soft Reset): *#7780#

Complet Reset (Hard Reset): *#7370# Code 12345

    ReplyDelete
  27. Rizauddin, I don't believe you haven't had any issues with your phone. Maybe you just have lower expectations of a pioneering phone.

I should point out, this is the best selling consumer phone right now, so there will be plenty of people with plenty of phones. For each person complaining in forums, there must plenty more satisfied with there phone. However, I know 4 other friends with this phone, all have issues with it.

I am today on my second 5800, and in the first hour I've had endless hanging, finally using the hard reset (and after reading these posts, plan on formatting my memory which sounds to be the problem).

Although I sound anti-5800, I love this phone. It offers far far more than its competitors. All those comparing the 5800 to the iPhone would be like comparing a Ford Mondeo to a 3 Series BMW.

I pay £18 p/month for this phone with Virgin. As soon as I can afford £40 p/month for the iPhone, I'll be sure to tell you if it performs any better.

    ReplyDelete
  28. "lower expectations" was the second of my possible reasons Rizauddin doesn't have any problems with his phone.

Reading these comments, I realise that maybe I'm lucky. Hardware-wise, my phone works well.

What I can't beleive is that I still need to synch and carry around my PalmVx - TEN YEAR OLD TECH - to have well-organised tasks, contacts and notes!

When you go to Nokia's own blog, you see people asking for category synch for over 3 years, and Nokia not doing anything about it, not even responding. Incredible.

    ReplyDelete
  29. For me, the 5800 tasks, contacts and notes are good enough, even though I really hope that it could sync with Thunderbird since I am not using Windows.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Mathew, I can't say I've ever come across a phone which does handle one's organisational needs.

I've decided one though, I'll be keeping this phone until Virgin release a new/upgraded Nokia on a similar tarif to mine and then complain to Virgin about these faults until they exchange. The adviser at Virgin didn't take much persuading to replace my phone and stated they would be happy to keep replacing it until my problem is solved. So either there having many problems, or they're very relaxed and eager to please customers.

  31. Hard reset instructions are hard to follow

    ReplyDelete
  32. @dennis: You need to use both hands, or, perhaps ask your friend to help.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Completely right!!, the description is all wrong, due to this i made a hard reset not a soft one :@. I just wanted soft reset, and so.. why isn't anyone saying nothing about it ?? WTF!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. emm FRANKIE RAY is right just press the simple code to hard reset my 5800xm was ok right now thanks guys i just press #7370# Code 12345 and after a few second my hp was restart and ok . actually before this my hp was lost the button contac and button call so now was ok heheh thanks a lot FRANKIE RAY

    ReplyDelete
  35. @Frankie Ray: The alternative to *#7780# is the Menu > Settings > Phone > Phone mgmt. > Factory settings. It will only restore the factory settings. It is not called soft reset.

The soft reset *#7370# will reset the phone to its factory settings and delete all user info.

The hard reset explained in this tutorial is like doing format C: on your computer. It will delete everything in the phone including installed softwares, and restore factory settings.

    ReplyDelete
  36. That was a silly thing to admit to. I did a similar thing myself to my last phone.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I tryed to instal windows msn all in one on my NOKIA 5800,but I couldn't,there was writen

    ReplyDelete
  38. @igor: Not three buttons, but, four instead. First, you need to switch the phone (just take off the battery, if you can't switch it off). Second, Press green, red, camera as well as the on button to switch on the phone.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I did it but there is the same.lighting white display and only write N O K I A and turn off again:(

  40. I did it but there is the same.lighting white display and only write N O K I A and turn off again:( please help me

    ReplyDelete
  41. @igor: Perhaps, your phone is out of battery. Try to charge the battery it first.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  43. @igor: If that is the case, IMHO, you should send your phone back to Nokia retailer.

    ReplyDelete
  44. how can I put new sofwere?now is on recherger and on display is writen only Phone start-up failed.
    Contact the retailer

    ReplyDelete
  45. ok batter you try to take out your micro sd card first then turn on the fone again.using the memory card reader you format your memory card for hard reset use the code *#7370# when they ask the key just put this number 12345 after that your hp will restart for moment just fill the dae and time your hp will be standart setting again :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Here is a "Hard Solution" instead a Hard Reset (for all brand):

    step 1: Take a matches
step 2: Take some gasoline liquids
step 3: Put the gasoline on the phone
    step 4: ..........

  47. hi every one saw many frustrated faces . i was one too when i bought one 6 months back .
1 .the phone wont turn on after i switch off.
    2. i did firmware update and lost all the 300 songs and videos .
    3. homescreen contact and dialpad wont work .
    i became f%&*&* up man !

at last found out the reasons . 1. The phone turns on if u remove the mmc card befor restarting. the phone tries to install all the applications before turning on so as to make it ready to use . removing the mmc the phone on after loading only phone mem applications .
    2. the song file get corrupted . you can find the files each license 1kb total 300kb in many sites depending on country. google it put those in right folder your music will play.3. DId a hard reset call+End+camera and turn on !

    ReplyDelete
  48. @funnyboy: It seems like your memory card was corrupted. What if you format the memory card as well.

    its really pissed me off.
when i'm recording the video, there is an error to save in memory card.
instead it will save the video to phone memory.

    help me :(

    ReplyDelete
  56. @help me: Try to format your memory card. But, don't forget to make a backup of its contents.

    ReplyDelete
  57. sorry but i'm not that good in phones.
but if backup the contents, when i format the memory card where can i find the backed up contents?

    ReplyDelete
  58. @help me: Before formatting the memory card, you can copy the contents of your memory card to somewhere else. Just connect it to your PC, and it can react as a USB flash drive.

    ReplyDelete
  59. so when i format the memory card, do i have to re-install the softwares that i installed before?

    ReplyDelete
  60. @help me: Yes, if you opt to install those software into the memory card.

    ReplyDelete
  61. So if I backup my files that means that when i hard restore I can get them back? If so, how do I get them back? Or do they all just stay where they were ?

    ReplyDelete
  62. @Kiki: Yes, you can get it back. In my opinion the easiest way to backup is by using Nokia PC Suite.

    ReplyDelete
  63. ive entered the *#7370# number and it asks for a code but ive never actually put a code in my phone since ive had it

  67. ive put a passcode on my memory card and have forgotten the passcode i now have a new phone but as the phone cannot accept this amount of memory card i wish to sell it on but can you tell me how i remove the passcode plz ??

    ReplyDelete
  68. @Kayleigh: The easiest way to remove memory card password is by formatting it. However formatting the card will destroy all the data.

    ReplyDelete
  69. For phones with version 10 dis hard reset code wont work(green+red+camera+on) pls give me code for version 10. and after I downloaded update v.20 or 30 it wont install compatibility issues.

  71. hi all.. my 5800 works fine most of the time especially after upg to V 40....!

but i have old apps thats not working or crappy.. i can't remove it so any ideas wat to do..?

if i do a m.card format using the usb data cable will that be ok coz i have no memory card reader ?

i thought i format the mcard then do a hard format..?

will that return my phone to default setting and apps and remove all the apps i have added ?

plus any ideas if skype is available for this phone..?

    ReplyDelete
  72. @wolfrayet: You can format the memory card using the phone.

How to format the memory card using Nokia 5800 phone.
    1. press the white menu button.
    2. Select "Applications".
    3. Select "File Manager".
    4. Double-click on "E: Memory Card".
    5. Select "Options".
    6. Select "Memory Card Options" and then "Format".

Please note that formatting the memory card will erase everything on it. Hence, do not forget to perform backup initially.

Personally, I do not believe that you need to format the memory card before performing phone hard format.

    ReplyDelete
  81. i need to reset but i forgot the code, please tell me, how can i do, thanks

    ReplyDelete
  82. @Augustin: There is no way that you can reset the phone without the password. BTW, the default factory password is 12345.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I have same problem, only solution I can see on other forums is to do a hard reset. I will use it till contract runs out and then thats it no more nokia after 15 years of buying only nokia. So dumb that the biggest maker of mobile phones released this phone with so many problems. First firmware version was a joke used us all as guinea pigs. Should not have to do a hard reset, how many times do you have to reinstall the operating system in a computer, S60 just not up to been a smart phone, the N97 have the same probs as the 5800. It can do a lot of things well but the call log problem, music player not refreshing the library, real player cant multi task, the browser is slow and no kinetic scrolling, can't change themes without causing phone to restart, firmware updates take forever to roll out, all these bogus websites saying how good the phones are but remember these guys change their phone every few months so any problems they never see and give a bullshit review, N97 is shit phone and it was hailed as a flagship phone, N900 same and thing is too big for your pocket, all a joke by nokia and hence they are loosing market share. Would be very surprised out of the eight million 5800's sold I would safely say half will not but their next phone from nokia. If other phone makers (which I doubt) have the same problems as nokia then the hardware and software is not there to make relaible smart phones, I think it is but nokia have been lazy and dropped their game.

    ReplyDelete
  84. @Ken: Guinea pig? I have to agree with you on this one.

    ReplyDelete

Everytime i try to update with the nokia software updater, the update will stop at 26 mb. i thought maybe it because of the server or my internet connection but i try about 5 times everyday, still same. my current software version is V21.0.025.

  102. Hi Everybody,

My phone is an 5800 I bought it about a month ago.
The installation of MTP-USB driver is failed, ok.
But, actually the OVI Suite cant recognize my phone. This is too much!
If I remove the memory card, then recognize it perfectly.
As I think I need to format the memory card don't you?
But first needed to uninstalling all installed software.

    Is it correct?

How can I format the memory card?

    Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  103. @monxla: Please refer to this post to format the memory card.

As an addition, please always perform backup first.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Hello

    Thank you of your reply.

I can not make backup because can not connect to the PC to the XM 5800 thought USB.

    :-(

    Thanks again.

    ReplyDelete
  105. @monxla: To backup the smart card without the phone, take it out of the phone and use a smart card reader to read and copy the files to your pc.

BTW, instead of using Ovi Suite, try Nokia PC Suite. IMHO, PC Suite is much more stable as compared to Ovi Suite.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Hello

    Thank you of your reply.
I will try Nokia PC Suite.
I known the way to backup SD card. But it contains installed application which registered to Symbian dont'you?
Therefore if I backing up the content of my SD card, after format and copy it again it will works perfectly?
In my humble opinion will not work perfectly. Am I right?

    ReplyDelete
  107. correction: copy it again = restore it

    ReplyDelete
  108. hello Again,

    Nokia PC Suite works perfectly.
    But!
I thought, try again the OVI Suite.
I was surprised, because it works perfectly except for the installation of MTP-USB driver.

Thank you of your all help, I hope the OVI & Nokia suites will works perfectly in the future.

  113. Hi, rizauddin!
    I got question.
Im using my nokia 5800 for half year and just one day it stoped working while I was browsing music. Its kinda work... I dont know how to explain it properly but its like, my touch screen doesnt work, it doesnt repsond to my actions. Before Ive done Hard Reset it Vibrated when I touched sceern and showed multimedia taskbar. Worked green, red, middle and camera buttons as they should.
But it doesnt respond to touch.
And its not damaged and it dont have any visual damage.
I thought hard reset will help but it doesnt at all. I guess its bug or touch screen is broken.
    Whats your opinion in this?

  115. @Harsh: You need to restore most of the third party software after performing hard reset. As for the maps, you can download Ovi maps for free.

  128. @criselle: Before performing hard reset, you can save all the data as well as preferences by doing backup using
    1. the phone to the memory card, or
    2. by using PC Suite to your PC.
