GIMP: Missing toolbar


In order to restore the missing toolbar for GIMP, locate and delete the "sessionrc" file in GIMP profile.

Where is the GIMP profile?

  • Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\your_username\.gimp-2.8
  • Vista and Windows 7: C:\Users\your_username\.gimp-2.8
  • Linux: /home/your_username/.gimp-2.8/

How to Enable / Install Telnet Client on Windows 7


Telnet is not enabled by default on Windows 7.

To install Telnet Client on Windows 7, open the Control Panel Home page and clicks Programs.

  1. In the Programs and Features section, click Turn Windows features on or off.

  2. In the Windows Features list, select Telnet Client, and then click OK.

How to make Firefox to Open Popup as a New Tab

The following procedure will make Firefox to open popup as a new tab.

  1. Launch Firefox, type
    about:config

    into the location bar, and hit the Enter key.

  2. Click the "I'll be careful, I promise!" button.

  3. Type
    browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction

    into the filter bar.

  4. Right click on the result, choose "Modify". Change the integer value to 0. The default is 2. Click OK.

  5. Finally, restart Firefox.

Now, all popup will open as a new tab.

How to clear the DNS cache for Windows, Mac and Linux

Command for clearing the DNS cache for Windows, Mac and Linux.

The commands need to be run at the command prompt with administrator privileges.

Windows

ipconfig /flushdns

Mac OSX 10.4 (Tiger)

lookupd -flushcache

Mac OSX 10.5/10.6 (Leopard/Snow Leopard)

dscacheutil -flushcache

Linux (Most Distributions)

sudo /etc/init.d/nscd restart
or
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Show File Extensions in Windows 7

Windows 7 hides file extensions information by default.

To see the file extension, please follow the following steps.
  1. Click the Start button (or, press the Windows key on keyboard).
  2. Type folder options in the Search Box. Hit Enter.
  3. Choose the View tab. Scroll down until you see the option Hide extensions for known file types.
  4. Uncheck it, and hit OK.


Now you can see file extensions for all your files.

Integrate Vim and IPython in Windows

Ipython and Vim is a great combination that make an IDE for Python.



By default, the IPython will use Windows default editor (Notepad), when %edit command is invoked.

To make Vim as the default editor, please follow the following steps:


Step 1.
Open file ipythonrc.ini which is located at “C:Usersyour username_ipython” in Windows 7 with any editor.


Step 2.
Search for line “editor 0”.


Step 3.
Replace that line to
editor vim
for Vim, or,
editor gvim –f
if  you prefer to use gVim.


Step 4.
Restart IPython and type %edit to start Vim.

Windows 7 Computer Management failed to start by right clicking Computer

Windows 7 Computer Management could be started by right clicking Computer, and choose Manage.
However, sometimes this method just do not work.
Perform these steps to solve the problem:
  1. Launch the Registry Editor.Press Windows key > Type regedit >  Press Enter > Click on Yes.
  2. Browse to
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}shell Managecommand
  3. Replace the default string value to
    "%SystemRoot%System32mmc.exe" "%SystemRoot%system32compmgmt.msc" /s
  4. Close Registry Editor.
You should now be able to right click Computer and choose Manage, to launch Computer Management.

Windows XP: How to create a password for the invisible administratoraccount

Windows XP create an administrator account by default which is invisible. This administrator account is not password protected. How to protect this account with a password?

Steps to password protect the administrator account.

Step 1.
If you are currently logged on to your computer, click Start, and then click Log Off.



Step 2.
On the “Welcome screen”, press CTRL+ALT+DEL twice on your keyboard by holding down both the CTRL and ALT keys and then pressing DELETE.

Step 3.
The “Log On to Windows” dialog box appears. In the “User name” box, type “Administrator”. Leave the “Password” box blank if you have not assigned a password. Click OK.


Step 4.

Open the entry “User Accounts” in the control panel. Click on the icon “Administrator” and select “Create a password”.

Step 5.

In the following dialog, specify a password for the “Administrator” account. Click “Create Password”.


It is important to create a strong but easily memorable password. A strong password should includes a combination of letters (small and capitals), numbers and special characters, and at least eight characters long.

How to configure Pidgin for Google Talk

Pidgin is an easy to use and free chat client that can connect to many chat networks all at once. The supported chat networks are AIM, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, Google Talk, Groupwise, ICQ, IRC, MSN, MySpaceIM, QQ, SILC, SIMPLE, Sametime, XMPP, Yahoo! and Zephyr.

But, sometimes Pidgin just don't work with Google Talk. You need to tweak Pidgin in order to make it works.

Here are the steps (as shown in Figure 1):
  1. Click on Account > Manage Accounts, add new Google Talk account. Fill in the Username and Password.
  2. Click to the Advance tab.
  3. Make sure that "Require SSL/TLS" and "Force old (port 5223) SSL are selected.
  4. Type 443 for "Connect port".
  5. Type "talk.google.com" for "Connect Server".
  6. Click on the "Save" button.
Pidgin should now works with Google Talk. By the way, I also figured out that sometimes I need to remove these settings, in order to connect to Google Talk, when I move to different place.

Replace y with 3 to download YouTube Video

3outube.com provides an easy way to download YouTube videos to your PC. The video could be downloaded in MP4 or FLV formats. The service is provided for free.

In order to download the video, replace the letter “y” with number “3” of the YouTube video link that you want to download as shown in Figure 1. Finally, choose the format of the video to download (Figure 2).

You can also go to their website and enter the YouTube video link directly inside a text box at the bottom of the page.

I know there are other similar service exist, but replacing letter “y” with the number “3” to download the video is such an awesome idea.

How to create word cloud for free

Word cloud also known as tag cloud is a generated tags based on the words of a web site. In other words, we can say that it is a visual picture of a web site.

Wordle is a free web application to create word cloud. It has the capability to create word cloud from a bunch of pasted text, from a blog or web site with Atom or RSS feed enabled, and from del.icio.us user tags.

According to Wordle, word cloud created with Wordle can be used for anything, even if you are making profit of it, as long as the credit goes back to http://www.wordle.net/. Images created by the Wordle.net web application are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 United States License. Examples of usage include book cover, t-shirt or even as blog header like the one used by WordPress Foundation blog, which was made public today. Read WordPress Foundation first article.

Firefox 3.6 keyboard shortcuts

Mozilla Firefox 3.6 (codename Namoroka) was released yesterday. Mozilla claims that Firefox 3.6, which was built on Mozilla's Gecko 1.9.2 web rendering platform, is faster and more responsive than the previous version.

Table 1 listed the Firefox keyboard shortcuts that will help you use Firefox expeditiously.

As an addition, the mouse middle button is also useful. Click the middle mouse button on a tab will close it. Click the middle mouse button on a link will open the link in a new window.

You can also make the middle mouse button to paste copied text, as in Linux. However, you need to tweak Firefox a bit.

This are the steps to enable the middle mouse button as a paste command.

  1. Move the cursor to the location bar by using your mouse or ctrl + L shortcut key.

  2. Type about:config in the location bar and press Enter.

  3. Click on “I’ll be careful, I promise!”.

  4. Type middlemouse in the Filter bar. A list of commands will appear.

  5. Double click command middlemouse.paste. Note that it’s value will now turns to True.

Windows 7 GodMode: Access all Windows settings

Windows 7 GodMode
Windows 7 GodMode enable you to access all Windows settings from one place.

To enable Windows 7 GodMode:
  1. Create a new folder.
  2. Rename it to the following: GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
If you do it right, the icon of that new folder will change to resemble the control panel icon.

Orbit Downloader hijacks 404 error pages

Orbit Downloader is a free download manager for Windows operating system without ads. Besides, it can also be used to download video/music/streaming media from Myspace, YouTube, Imeem, Pandora, and Rapidshare.

However, in spite of being an ads free download manager, by default it will hijack all 404 error pages in your browser, by redirecting the pages to orbitdownloader.com search page.

Maybe it is a good feature that you might like, but it is not for me.

Fortunately, Orbit Downloader allow you to disable this feature, as depicted in Figure 1.

To disable this feature,
  1. Open Orbit Downloader windows, from the Start Menu, or by double clicking its icon in the system tray.
  2. Click on Tools > Preferences > Monitoring.
  3. Untick "Let Orbit suggestions on browser navigation error".
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart your browser.

Enable Mod Rewrite on WAMPSERVER

You need to enable Mod Rewrite in order to use pretty permalinks in WordPress or Clean URLs in Drupal.

However, WAMPSERVER does not enable Mod Rewrite by default.

To enable Mod Rewrite,
  1. Click on the WAMPSERVER icon in the system tray, and choose Apache.
  2. Click on Apache modules.
  3. Click on the down triangle until you see rewrite_module. Click to enable it.
  4. Restart All Services.
Figure 1 shows the steps graphically.
